Turkish Get-up Warm-up

June 9, 2009 by admin

The Kettlebell Turkish Get-up has become a favorite exercise in combat sport and martial arts conditioning circles. I have always been a fan, however, some morning I need a little movement prep before I begin my Turkish Get-up practice.

This is my favorite bodyweight warm-up prior to performing Get-ups. This warm-up covers everything!

Here’s a cool instructional video of the Kettlebell Turkish Get-up in case you’re having any issues with mastering the Get-up.

I’ve been training with kettlebells for almost a year 3-4 times per week. I started incorporating the Turkish get-up into my workout about two months ago. When I started, I was doing 4 TGUs per side with a 16kg bell. I’ve worked my way up to 11 TGUs per side (7 w/ 24 Kg and 5 w/ 20kg bell). I’ve set a goal for myself of doing a TGU with 48 kg (or 100 lbs) by years end. Any thoughts on how I can achieve this would be appreciated.

    Jason,

I just started viewing some of your stuff and came across your video on the swine flu. I couldn’t agree more! I am a 37 year veteran of high school football and strength coaching and let me tell you, the tail wags the dog. Our focus in our schools these days goes something like this; avoid parental conflict, don’t hold students accountable for their work or actions and let me back up to my paycheck and get home! Now obviously there are still many, many good teachers and coaches out here fighting the good fight but it has become increasingly difficult and the media fuels the fire. Every kid has a cell phone and a lawyer and most have parents who blame everyone except themselves for their own children. So as soon as they have an issue, they take it to the media and it becomes a circus.

You mentioned obesity and laziness. We have many students in a freshman level PE class who cannot even do ONE pushup….. ONE!! This generation is dieing and all the schools do is cut back on PE classes in favor of more state testing.

Anyway, I could go on and on but I guess I’d better get off the soap box. I just wanted to say amen to your thoughts and keep up the good work.

    Hey Greg,

Don’t even get me started. I think were done as a country and a culture. We will be gone soon and it will be our own fault. We are weak, fat, lazy and entitled. The level of physical fitness in this country is horrible and it worsens everyday.

I’m very grateful for those people(you guys) that are fighting the good fight but I’m afraid that the numbers that are against us are too great.

    Tyrus,

Do you have bell heavier than 24kg? If you can get 7 reps with a 24kg kettlebell move up in weight.

Stay below 5 reps…3 reps even better. You’ll get there soon.

Great stuff, Jason! Keep it going better and stronger every time!

BTW…being a retired military type…please hang the American flag with the field of blue and stars on the left side as you view it!

    Hey Mark,

Could you point me to resource that says “Why” teh flag should be hung as you suggested?

    Thanks.

I haven’t been able to find a “why” behind the Etiquette.

Good Stuff Jason…this is something that I am going to use on my self as a great warm up. Let me know when Level 2 is going to become a reality. I am there.

Info on the “Exclusive Jason @ Pamela Kettlebells” seen in the new facility clip would be appreciated.

    Jason,

The heaviest KB I have is 24kg. The gym I work out at has 28kg and 32kg KBs. I’ll start out this Friday w/ 3 reps per side with the 28kg bell. Right now I’m resting between sets (both arms) for 30-45 seconds. In addition to the heavier weight, I’d like to work in the lighter weight KB (24 or even 20kg) for form. Good idea / bad idea - your thougts are appreciated.

    Awesome stuff brother…..again!!!

I hope Anthony Diluglio doesn’t see the performance of the “high bridge” as a warm-up to the TGU. He recently belittled the “high bridge” in the TGU and I’m not sure why as it is a great, athletic part of the movement. BTW, I love your site…Keep up the great work!

  23. admin on June 16th, 2009 4:24 pm

    Hey Steve,

Thanks for the kind words…I’m glad you like the site. We don’t always use the high bridge on the TGU but I do think it’s a great variation & movement.

We actually use 3 different variations of the TGU. I’ll show a 4th variation this week that I just picked up from one of wrestlers.

Spida! My homeboy…hope you’re well down there.

  25. admin on June 16th, 2009 4:30 pm

    Tyrus,

I would extend your rest period to 1-3 minutes. If you feel you need the lighter sets go ahead but by extending your rest periods with the heavier weight your form should be tight.

  26. admin on June 16th, 2009 4:31 pm

    Christian,

Thanks for visiting and for taking part in our Fast Track workout. How’s the shirt fit?

  27. admin on June 16th, 2009 4:32 pm

    Patrick,

You can pick up a set of the bells at PerformBetter.com or click the image below this post.

    Great prices and no shipping.

  28. Tyrus on June 17th, 2009 6:52 pm

I took your advice on increasing the rest period to a minute and a half between sets of two (one each arm). My form was definitely tighter and I still felt I was getting a solid workout. Thanks for the training assist.
