Kettlebell Exercises..Breathing Ladders
June 17, 2009 by admin
I picked up this kettlebell training technique from friend Rob Lawrence, it’s called a Breathing Ladder. Basically you match the numbers of breaths you take with the number of reps you’ve performed.
I believe Rob actually placed the kettlebell down while taking his breaths but I’ve found this variation on Rob’s principle great for combat sport athletes and martial artists that need to keep a clear head while in a fatigued state.
Play around with different kettlebel exercises such as the Clean and Jerk/Press or Jerk alone. Let me know how it goes in the comments section below.

WOW!! another awesome technique,,keep ‘em comin
I tried this this evening and it seems this is a legitimate variation, i.e. not just a variation for variations sake. Stabilizing the bell while deep breathing was a challenge in later reps.
Worked this into my workout this afternoon with snatches. I went 1-3 and 3-1 on each arm twice. What I found is the more slowly and controlled my breathing folowing each exercise interval, the better I felt during the exercise. The first set was a butt kicker. It kinda reminded me of what it might feel like to drown (as weird as that probably sounds). I attribute this to breathing too fast and shallow. I’m gonna work this into my routine for an extended period to get the feel for the benefits of this technique.
You guys are awesome! Thanks for giving this a go.
Tyrus…I completely agree with your drowning statement. That’s exactly what I experienced as well.
Splint,
How high did you make it?
Thanks Keith,
How is the combat sports conditioning world up there in LI ?
I am getting ready for my first BJJ tourney on 7/11 but want to add these into my training after that is done. What sort of frequency can they be done at. Everything I have read on them is awesome in terms of benefits!!
