November 6, 2009
Well, I’m finally getting ready for my trip to Brasil but I wanted to give a quick heads-up with some recent goin-ons.
Coming up this weekend we have out Level 1 Kettlebell Cert for Fitness Professionals in Philadelphia PA. We’re also hosting a Suspension Training Course for our friends over at TRX, Fitness Anywhere.
This weekend will be very crazy and very rewarding.
While in Brasil, I’ll get what my 2 training tools will be ? Yep, kettlebells and a TRX. They’ll go with me everywhere. Along with my beautiful wife and 2 little monkey boys.
I’ll also be training with some outstanding coaches and athletes and I hope to bring home some great videos for you, so keep your eyes on your inbox.
If you ever get a chance to go to Brasil just email me….I know where all the best gyms and trainers are if you’re looking to get some workouts in. And of course you can’t go wrong with some beach training either.
And finally, in case you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard the news. My new 24-week video coaching class “Kettlebell Training for BJJ” is now open, however, I only have 7 spots available.
This course is specificially designed for BJJ & Judo athletes and will walk you through a new video coaching module each week for 24-weeks.

I’m Done with Kettlebell Training…Forever!
October 31, 2009
In Kettlebell Training I thought I had found one of, if not the best training tool for all around conditioning and fitness.
That is…until found this. If I remember correctly, the nuns in grade school caught me doing this more than once I don’t think that they ever forgave !
I was thinking about picking one of these bad boys up but I probably average about 2 hours of that movement per day now as it is. I wouldn’t want to create an overuse injury or anything.
There’s even a women’s model: This one is EVEN BETTER:
Now, on a more serious note, if you want to check out a system that works now, has been working for over 5 years and will continue to work until the cows come check this out: Kettlebells 4 Sport 7 Fitness.

Local Muscular Endurance …Legs
October 8, 2009
As part of our on-going series on building local muscular endurance for combat sports conditioning we bring back Jen Sinkler, senior editor at Experience Life Magazine and professional Rugby player. Jen insists that Rugby is a combat sport so I agreed to highlighting some of her workouts here.
This workout can be brutal and make you quite sore for some time after your training session.
This workouts usually consists of 4 rounds :
- 24 Squats
- 24 Jump Squats
- 24 Lunges( we mix up the variations…forward, reverse, lateral)
- 24 Jumping Lunges
I recommend starting with 12 reps of every exercises performed for 1-2 rounds. As your conditioning and tolerance improves work towards the full workout.
Training for Warriors Seminar…Martin Rooney
October 5, 2009
My good friend and mentor Martin Rooney will be holding a Training for Warriors seminar on October 24th in Saco Maine.
Trust me! I have no clue where Saco Maine is but Martin is one of the most knowledgeable and giving coaches that specializes in combat sport and martial arts conditioning.
Martin is the stength and conditioning coach for Team Renzo Gracie and is responsible for getting people like Roger and Rolles Gracie into fighting shape. That’s quite an impressive resume.

More Muscular Endurance
October 5, 2009
Last week I took you through one of Lamont Lister’s local muscular endurance sets.
This week we highlight Jen Sinkler, a professional Rugby player and senior editor of Experience Life Magazine.
Jen insisted that I highlight her amongst the combat athletes that we train simply because she crushes many of them during our training sessions.
This workout is another local muscular endurance training session with a focus on the pulling musculature.
4 exercises…30 seconds at each exercises. Back and bis are usually mosh at the end of this.
- Pull-ups
- Ring Rows or TRX Rows
- Slam Ball
- Band Snap-downs or skiers.
Free Grappling Concepts DVD
September 30, 2009
My good friend and BJJ mentor Stephan Kesting is giving away a free DVD to help promote a his new Grappling Concepts Ecourse.
I have always been a fan of Stephan’s work but he seriously over-delivered on this one. Check out the video below to hear my thoughts.
If you want to see what Stephan is offering asap please go here: Free Grappling Concepts DVD.
Building Local Muscular Endurance
September 30, 2009
Building local muscular endurance is a very important element for complete combat sports conditioning.
Depending on where our fighters and combat athletes are within their training schedule we like to spend several weeks developing local muscular endurance.
We run through several circuits that consist of several exercises for each muscle group. Below is a quick sample of our push circuit.
Please note: Every exercise within the circuit does not need to be a true pushing exercise. We look more at the muscle group involved…the pecs for example in the following video.
Stability Ball Tight Rotations
September 29, 2009
I posted a video a few days ago about Power Rope Tight Rotations for developing incredible abs. This stability ball exercise is another example of “Tight Rotations.”
Both of these exercises have their place in any well designed program, however, the Stability Ball Tight Rotation is a bit more re-active and not so cyclical.
It keeps you guessing and I like that!
I personally like to use these as a finisher at the end of a circuit.
Advanced MMA Power
September 24, 2009
If you’ve been following my work for some time you know that I love to work with combat athletes and martial artists of all skill and fitness levels as well as various martial art backrounds.
I train my share of MMA athletes and boxers but what really get’s me going is working with BJJ and judo players. That’s where my heart lies most.
That’s exactly why I like to network and share training ideas with strength coaches that might specialize in other areas, for example…Eric Wong.
Eric’s passion is working with MMA athletes and he’s released several great resources for MMA conditioniong. His latest resource is called Advanced MMA Power. Advanced MMA Power is one of the most well-written and science-based training programs that exist for MMA athletes.
Eric was kind enough to sit down and speak mma conditioning with me for a couple minutes over the phone and we recorded it all so you could listen along.
Eric shares some great insights within this interview so please check it out below. When you get a chance please visit Advanced MMA Power to see what Eric is offering…it really is an oustanding resource for all serious MMA athletes.
P.S. I don’t think Eric is keeping that sale up for very long…maybe only a day or 2 and to be honest, I’m probably a little late letting you know about it so I recommend you head over to Advanced MMA Power asap to check it out. Peace.
Tight Rotations for Core Conditioning
September 21, 2009
If you want an ab exercise that truely addresses the true design and function of your entire “core” region that you have to try Nick Tumminello’s “Tight Rotations” Series. Nick highlights several levels of his tight rotations on his blog at Nick Tumminello.
We do something similar in our training with power ropes. Any training tool is great but the key to successful training is progession and regression of exercise variables. Our posture is a little lower than Nick teaches but having having an upright posture is just so damn hard with the power rope tight rotations.
Try it out and you’ll quickly become a believer.
